Teacher By Day, Warrior By Night: Jujitsu Dojo Comes to West Hempstead

Popkin-Brogna Jujitsu Center relocates to West Hempstead.
Pass by Howard Popkin in the halls of George Washington Elementary School in West Hempstead, where he teaches fifth grade, and you probably would never peg the 42-year-old as a competitive fighter.
The same could be said for his business partner, Joseph Brogna, 45. But both have black belts and are nationally-renowned in the martial arts world for their expertise in the Japanese martial art of Jujitsu.
"We're not the model of shape," Popkin, 42, says. "We both have about 20 [lbs] we could lose .. People are surprised what we are capable of."
Like most people, Popkin was introduced to Jujitsu for self-defense purposes. He was nine at the time, but soon it became an "international pursuit" for him.
"I trained with everyone in the New York Tri-State area. I met them, I trained with them, I wanted to know who was the best," he explained. That was what led him to Tokyo in the summer of 2000, where he met his sensei.
"I was 27 and he was 72," Popkin recalls. On their first encounter, Popkin tried to take a swing at the old man to see if he lived up to his reputation, but instead in an instant, he was thrown 15 feet across the room. "It was like someone swatting a fly. That was the beginning of our relationship."
Popkin traveled to Japan four times a year and his sensei made the trip to the United States multiple times, so the two could train together for the next 15 years. During that time, Popkin became inspired to share what he was learning with others.
Today, the Popkin-Brogna Jujitsu Center has roughly 120 students, ranging in age from 3 to 79.
"Jujitsu is something that can be done by almost every age on almost every level," Popkin told Patch from inside his new dojo in West Hempstead. "You don't have to be in the best shape... but you can still gain benefits from it. Everybody can get more flexible, stronger and more confident."
After years of running the business out of a storefront on Dogwood Avenue in Franklin Square, Popkin and Brogna moved their studio to 400 Hempstead Tpke. in West Hempstead in mid-August and held a grand opening celebration on Oct. 7, which attracted close to 80 people.
"I'm pretty fond of West Hempstead," says Popkin, who has been teaching in the West Hempstead School District for the past 11 years.
As a teacher, he knows bullying is a big problem, which is why he focuses on training kids who come to his dojo on ways to diffuse bad situations, while also building up their confidence and teaching them the importance of exercise.
"Contrary to popular belief, [Jujitsu] is really not violent. We don't teach violence in any fashion," he said. "The Japanese martial arts have a real esoteric peaceful side in them and that's ingrained in what we do. It is 100-percent 'walk away before you pick your hands up, talk your way out of it.''"
In the event though that you should have to defend yourself, Popkin says, his students learn, "If you can keep yourself calm and controlled, it's much easier to control the situation .. It's more about putting people into a place where they can't hurt you or putting someone in a place where if they tried to hurt you they'd end up hurting themselves."
Popkin encourages everyone to give Jujitsu a try. Right now, the studio is offering a grand opening special that includes six weeks of unlimited classes and a uniform for $69. And don't worry, he says, although first-timers should "expect to sweat a lot" and "do a couple of things maybe they haven't tried before," he says they'll only be challenged "a little" in the beginning.
"I think we are like a hidden gem," Popkin says of the dojo. "People love being here. We have a wonderful friendly atmosphere."
Popkin-Brogna Jujitsu Center is open five days a week, Monday-Thursday and Sunday mornings. For more information visit popkinbrognaselfdefense.com

Training during the Holiday Season

For many people the holiday season represents a time surrounded by family, friends, good food and lots of parties.    While I have always loved this time of year and all the hoopla, I have always seen this time of year to reflect back on the year that has passed. I think of loved ones, friends and people who have influenced my life in a positive way.   Most of these people have been my past training partners.  The pain of losing a family member never leaves, the same could be said for my dojo mates who have passed. The experiences I have had with my training partners have forged us as an extended family.

I look back on the old times with many emotions, but mostly as a time to rededicate myself to my training as a salute to my training partners who can no longer train with me. Many of them died in tragic ways, way before their time, others died doing what they loved and passed away on the mat. So I dedicate my training during the holiday season to the memories of my fallen friends and heroes....Gramps, Steve, Tony, Trevor, Jack and Barry.

I bow respectfully,

Joe Brogna

Joe Brogna, Howard Popkin, and Dimitri Sensei taught a seminar at Shindai Dojo in Orlando, Florida.

Over 30 participants from as close as Orlando, and as far away as Seattle worked tirelessly for 3 days studying connection, aiki, balance, and stability....with the occasional jujitsu technique thrown in.

Many thanks to Steve Fasen Sensei for hosting and all the participants for putting up with my accent :)

About Joe Brogna Sensei !

this was written by George Ledyard Sensei about the seminar that Joe Brogna Sensei of the Daitoryu Aikijujitsu Ginjukai taught recently in Seattle !!

"Originally, this seminar was scheduled with Popkin Sensei, who is one of the great teachers of "aiki" principles that I know of. We set up a Daito Ryu Study Group under his oversight and he is kind enough to journey out several times a year to work with us.

On a number of occasions, we were fortunate enough to have Popkin Sensei's co-dojo cho, Joe Brogna come along with him. Another fantastically knowledgeable instructor, these seminars with the two of them have been doubly wonderful since we all received twice the attention.

This time, however, Popkin Sensei is about to become a new Daddy and didn't wish to be away from home so Brogna Sensei was dispatched to help us (a good thing for Howard and Lisa as the hurricane hit right during the seminar).

This was the first time we got to experience a whole seminar with Brogna Sensei and I have to say we knocked out by what a fantastic job he did. The idea that their dojo back East has two instructors at that level just seems more than a bit unfair. Brogna Sensei organized the material in a linear progression that made making connections between the principles being taught very clear.

I am always a bit surprised that more folks from the Aikido community don't take advantage of these two fine teachers. While the style they teach is Daito Ryu, and specifically the Daito Ryu of Okamoto Sensei, any Aikido person enamored of the kind of effortless technique you would have seen with Yamaguchi Sensei or still can experience with a teacher like Endo Sensei or Saotome Sensei would do well to do some work with these two teachers.

Personally, I have little or no trouble applying the principles taught in this style of Daito Ryu to my own Aikido. The outer forms my be different but the inner principles are exactly the same. If you get a chance to attend a seminar taught by either Popkin Sensei or Brogna Sensei do not miss it..."

Thanks Ledyard Sensei !!!!
This post was written by Darrell D'Antonoli Sensei about this past weekend's seminar in Mesa, Arizona at the Arizona branch of the Daitoryu Aikijujitsu Ginjukai.

Very honored to have someone write about me like this..

http://martialartsmesa.com/daito-ryu-aikijujutsu-seminar-mes/

"Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu Mesa Arizona – To me it is hard to express the feelings I felt being at the Dojo over this weekend with so many friends and students in addition to all the other martial artists whom I just met for the first time, even though I felt as though they were old friends. Last weekends event was one of the very best I believe the Budo Shingikan Dojo has ever put on thus far. We had Martial Art Schools from across Arizona show up in force along with several representatives from other schools in other States travel to our home Dojo in Mesa, Arizona for this wonderful presentation of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu. Not only were there no gaps between training styles there was no ego, just a group of very knowledgeable people who put “what they know” down for a second in order to “empty their cup” as the saying goes to learn something new. What a great example of humility from so many of you in the martial arts community. It was a true pleasure to have the opportunity to work with all the attendees as well as get some more of Howard Popkin Sensei’s amazing instruction. I applaud all those who came to join as students this weekend and look forward to a long and continued friendship with each and every one of you.
This weekends focus was primarily on the elusive concept known in Japanese martial arts as “Aiki”. The use of Aiki within martial practice to me is really that of the Graduate School of understanding martial arts as it is primarily less concerned with the opponent and far more driven by controlling ones self and ones body via a complex understanding of anatomy, structure within the body, and the ability to map that structure and truly comprehend its effects for maximum ability of application. Aiki is literally translated as harmonizing ones energy, which gives it some sort of mystical and magical air around it, however a study in Daito Ryu quickly puts these notions out of your mind and simplifies the transmission of such knowledge into physical and structural boundaries giving the practitioner a more solid and concrete idea of what Aiki really is. Popkin Sensei stated that the Japanese rendering of the word Ai Ki Ju Jitsu (合気柔術) is very straight on in the sense of meaning. Ai – Harmony (not fighting points of conflict), Ki – Energy (or Force), Ju – Soft, Jitsu – Techniques. The name pretty much sums it all up if you ask me! Doing it and applying it is another task all together, one that is as joyous in its challenging nature as utilitarian as a martial tool.
Howard Popkin Sensei is my Sensei, so I will be the very first person to say that I am extremely biased ;) However I can tell that as a human being I have met very few people as sincere and kind as Popkin Sensei. When I say kind I mean that he really cares about each of his students whether they are a direct student or a seminar participant. This is the main attribute that I believe sets Sensei apart from others. He isn’t there to take your money and show you some cool “stuff”. He is there to teach you and he expects you to learn! If you aren’t learning the information then something is wrong. I have met several teachers over two decades of practice and I can personally tell you that there are teachers who demonstrate and those who teach. Demonstration is very cool to see that something is real or true, however it leaves the student unable to perform the same tasks. The teacher that truly teaches has students who can duplicate and understand the information through the transmission of knowledge. Popkin Sensei teaches period. He has a genuine desire for all to learn, coupled with the fact that he is an educator by trade. I have found this as a large benefit because Sensei has methods of teaching that are not only unique in the martial arts world but effective to all levels of student understanding. I simply have not found many people at all with this ability to teach in the same manner.
I as well as the entire Budo Shingikan Dojo Staff & Student base would like thank Sensei for coming out to spend time with us and teach us and I would also like to thank the 30+ individuals who showed up to be a part of our Dojo for the weekend, we admire your openness to learning new things and appreciate your friendship. We sincerely look forward to seeing you all again very soon."

Dojo Family,

At this point we are sure that you see what we are seeing.  People are fighting over gasoline.  Many still dont have power, heat or hot water.

There are many towns that still have no street lights and most people are hesitant to travel.

West Hempstead Schools are still closed.  They re-open for students on Wednesday.

With that in mind, Sensei's believe it is in everyone's best interest to wait until Wednesday to re-open the dojo.  By that time, hopefully most will have power and the gas issue should be easing.  Sensei Brogna drove to Connecticut last night to purchase gas.

Sensei and I will gladly offer make ups for all the missed days.  In addition, we would like to make November Family Month.  Please use the dojo as a way for family members to relieve stress, get a good workout, and have a great time.  Everyone in your family is welcome to come to class.  Everyone can use a positive experience right now.

For children, please bring new students to the White to Orange class.  If your child is in the orange and up class, they may accompany your other child to the White to Orange class, and then stay for their own class.  The advanced class is too difficult for new students.

Again, thanks for your understanding during this difficult time for everyone.

Best wishes, hope everyone is doing better.  See you Wednesday.

Sensei
